Rereading your question, maybe you weren't talking about what we
call "autocrop". If you were simply asking how to remove N columns
from the left side, it's just

convert input.png -chop Nx0 result.png
or from the top
convert input.png -chop 0xN result.png
or from the right
convert input.png -gravity east Nx0 result.png
or from the bottom

The solution below is for when you don't know the value of N, and want
to trim off all columns on the right side that are entirely of the same

Hy I tile a image: convert -crop 100x100 -fill blue -quality 30 image.jpg test%02d.jpg Unfotunately, the rightmost tiles and the bottom tiles are smaller if the specified geometry extends beyond the dimensions of the input image. I need the rightmost tiles and the bottom tiles in the same size. (100x100) The area beyond the dimensions of the input image I would like to fill with the color blue. How is it possible?

Image size is reduced without changing image resolution, so that images are not distorted. This operation has four modes. Use Crop Image dropdown list to switch between these modes.
Margins – select this mode to crop the number of pixels specified in left, top, right and bottom boxes from the corresponding sides of the image.
Rectangle (2 points) – if you choose this mode, you should specify a rectangle and the program will crop parts of the image not included into this rectangle. The rectangle is specified with upper left (left and top boxes) and lower right (right and bottom boxes) corner coordinates.
Rectangle (point, width and height) – in this mode, the program will also crop parts of the image not included into a specified rectangle. The rectangle is specified with upper left corner (left and top boxes), width (width box) and height (height box).
Margins autocrop – this mode is used to crop one-color margins from images of various size. Crop area is defined automatically for each image according to the specified color. This mode allows cropping one-color borders round photos leaving only meaningful parts of images. To adjust settings of margins autocrop mode you should specify color of cropped borders with the help of Auto crop border color dropdown list, and set tolerance slider to specify the admissible error percentage. To make sure that cropping is performed correctly, be very careful when specifying border color.

Example of usage

Say, we have a set of images that vary in size and have a border to be removed. Use Crop Image operation to process all such images at once.

You can pre-set the functions that are automatically carried out during a preview or scan, such as the Auto Crop or Auto Tone function, in the Preferences dialog.

Preview Tab

Preview at opening of ScanGear CS This category sets whether or not a preview scan is performed when ScanGear CS is started. Click one of the following options. When ScanGear CS is first installed, the Display saved preview image option is selected by default. Automatically execute preview This option automatically performs a preview scan when ScanGear CS is started. Display saved preview image This option saves the preview image when ScanGear CS is closed and opens it in the Preview Area when the program is started again. None This option does not display the previous preview image when ScanGear CS is started. * When the Display saved preview image option is selected, the settings of the Color Tab and the Toolbar rotation, mirror, invert, and rulers buttons are all saved with the image. * When ScanGear CS is first installed, the Display saved preview image option is selected by default. top Crop Border after Preview This category sets whether or not the image is cropped when an image is previewed. Executes the auto cropping after preview This option automatically crops the image to the size of the document when ScanGear CS is started. Displays the border defined by last cropping after preview This option saves the cropping frame when ScanGear CS is closed and displays it in the Preview Area when the program is started again. None This option does not display the previous cropping frame when ScanGear CS is started. Auto Cropping Enabled Auto Cropping Disabled * The Auto Crop function crops an image of multiple items on the document glass of the scanner as if they were a single item. In contrast, the Multi-Crop function detects each individual item and crops them accordingly. * When ScanGear CS is first installed, the Executes the auto cropping after preview option is selected by default. top

Scan Tab

When application hides driver user interface Some application programs, such as OCR software, do not display ScanGear CS's main window while scanning (UI off mode). These application programs set the scanning settings, preventing you from changing the Color Mode settings with the usual procedures. If you wish to scan with one of the Color Modes below, use this function to override the application program's settings. Color (Documents) A check mark in this option overrides the application program's setting to set the Color Mode to Color (Documents). Text Enhanced (Windows only) A check mark in this option overrides the application program's settings to set the Color Mode to Text Enhanced. * This setting is disabled when the UI mode (main window displays) is active. * When ScanGear CS is first installed, this option is set to Off by default. top Remove the white borders around the photos This function is only enabled when the Multi-Crop or Multi-Scan option has been selected. * This option automatically crops white spaces on the perimeter of photos when the Multi-Scan or Multi-Crop mode is used to scan. * When ScanGear CS is first installed, this option is selected by default. top Enable 48/16 bit output When a check mark is placed in this category, the Color (48 bit) and Grayscale (16 bit) options are added to the Color Mode category in the Advanced Mode, permitting finely detailed scanning. * The Grayscale (16 bit) setting is not reflected with this scanner. * If you remove the check mark from the Enable 48/16 bit output category in the Preferences window after you select Color (48 bit) in the Advanced Mode, the Color (48 bit) setting will switch to the regular Color setting. * Some application programs may not support images scanned with the Color(48 bit) settings. * When ScanGear CS is first installed, this option is turned off. top Automatically quit ScanGear CS after scanning A check mark in this option causes ScanGear CS to automatically close after a scan. * Some applications override this setting and always automatically close the ScanGear CS main window after scanning. * When ScanGear CS is first installed, this option is turned off. top [Sound settings] Button A sound file can be played during a scan or serve as an alert at the end of a scan. Click the [Sound settings] button to display the following dialog. A check mark in either the Play music during scanning or Play sound when scanning is complete option allows you to click the Browse button and select a sound file. * With Macintosh, the Play music during scanning option is not available. * Please adjust volume settings with the computer. They cannot be adjusted with ScanGear CS. * When the [Play sound when scanning is completed] option is selected, it takes longer than usual for the scanned image to appear in the application program. It may, depending upon the length of the chosen sound, take up to 10 seconds longer to display. * The following sound file formats can be selected. MIDI (*.mid, *.rmi, *.midi) Audio (*.wav, *.aiff) MP3 (*.mp3) top

Scanner Tab

Select folder where temporary files are saved This section selects the folder to which image files are temporarily saved. Click the [Browse] button to select a folder. Select a folder on another hard disk if there is insufficient free space on the startup disk. top [Test Scanner] Button Click the [Test Scanner] button if there appears to be a problem with the scanner during use. The [Scanner Diagnostics] window will display. Click the [Start] button to initiate the diagnostic test. top

Color Settings Tab

Recommended/Canon ColorGear (ColorSync)/None Select a color correction method from the Recommended; Canon ColorGear (Windows)/ColorSync (Macintosh); and None options. Recommended This option displays colors vividly on computer monitors. It is recommended for most purposes. Canon ColorGear ColorSync This option uses the Canon ColorGear/ColorSync color management system. It makes colors consistent between the scanned item, the monitor and a color printer. None No color correction is performed by ScanGear CS with this option. * This category is enabled when the Color mode is set to Color (Photos), Color (Documents), or Color (48 bit). * The Color tab functions cannot be used when the Canon ColorGear/ColorSync option is selected since color correction is automated with this option. (The Color tab will cease to display). * The Auto tone function cannot be used when the None option is selected. * This category is set to Recommended by default when ScanGear CS is first installed. About Canon ColorGear (Windows)/ColorSync (Macintosh) You can set the source (scanner), target and monitor profiles when the Canon ColorGear/ColorSync option is selected. Source (Scanner) Sets the scanner profile. Target Sets the RGB color space profile such as sRGB, Adobe RGB, monitor profile, printer profile, etc. Monitor * If a check mark is placed beside this category, the preview image is converted to the monitor's RGB color space and displayed. The final scan is converted to the color space specified in the output profile. * If the check mark is removed from this category, both the preview image and final scan are converted to the color space specified in the output profile. * Place a check mark here to scan if you are using an application program that supports a color management system. Color management systems will operate correctly when the settings are properly set in ScanGear CS, the operating system (monitor settings), the application program* and the printer driver. * The application program must support color management systems. Adobe Photoshop (Ver. 5.0 or more), Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Illustrator (Ver. 9.0 or more) are among the programs that do. The ArcSoft PhotoStudio program supplied with this scanner do not. To correct the color with a color management system, please use a program that supports it. top Always perform the auto tone A check mark in this option causes Auto Tone adjustment to be activated for each scan.

Configuring and using ALL of your crop tool’s capabilities can really speed up your work. Basic Crops
Most users of the crop tool simply select the crop tool, draw a crop area around the portion of the image they want and then double click on the inside of the cropped area to apply the crop. Then they go into the Image size dialog and struggle with the dimension and linear resolution of the file, sometimes having to return to fine tune the crop or even start over again. This is not only a pain in the patute, it is very time consuming and often results in lower quality final images as well, because several rounds of image size edits are applied. Here is a better way. Crop Tool Mechanics

1. Open an image
2. Duplicate that image (Image>Duplicate)
   Tip: make a keyboard short cut for this Duplicate function as you should do this with every image you open
3. Select the crop tool. The easy way to do this is to use its keyboard short cut “C”… easy to remember
   Now before you start drawing your drop area, slow down long enough to configure your Crop tool options palette. This is the context sensitive palette that appears just below the row of Photoshop menus. By de-fault all its fields are blank (which is why I suspect many people ignore this palette)
   
4. To enjoy the first feature of your crop tool option palette click on the Front Image button located on the right side of the palette. This will display the dimensions (6in x 8in) and the linear Resolution (200ppi) of the current active (Front) Image even before you have made a crop selection.. To clear these filed values simply click the Clear button located to the right of the Front Image button.
5. Press the Enter key to select the first crop options palette field (width)
6. To preset the width dimension of your cropped image type the value you want in the Width field (here 5″)
7. Press the Tab key to select the second crop options palette field (Height)
8. To preset the width dimension of your cropped image type the value you want in the Height field (here 4″)
9. Now if you realize that you have reversed the width and Height fields ( a common occurrence for me when working with portrait images) simply click the bidirectional arrows located between the width and Height fields.
   
10. To preset the linear resolution of your cropped image press the Tab a second time to select the Resolu-tion filed. Type in your desired resolution here (100ppi)
    
11. Now you are ready to draw your crop border. Click and drag the crop tool across your image to include as much of the image as you like.. You will notice that your crop border will be constrained to a 4×5 ratio preset in the width and height field
12. You can edit the size of the cropped area by clicking and dragging on any of the crop box corner control points. Note however that as you drag to resize your crop box, the ratio of the Width and Height will re-main the same (here 4×5)
13. You can move the position of the crop box by clicking and dragging anywhere within the crop box
14. You can also rotate your crop box by clicking anywhere outside the crop box and dragging to rotate the crop box.
15. Note that by default the cropped-out area is defined by a semitransparent black screen, known as the crop Shield. Once you have made your initial crop box selection, the color and opacity of your crop shield can be edited in the crop options palette. Or if you prefer the shield can be disabled completely by unchecking the Shield checkbox.
    
16. You can even apply a distortion effect to your cropped area by checking ON the Perspective check box. This will allow you to click and independently drag the crop box corner control points.
    
17. And if you fine a set of crop setting that you would like to use repeatedly, you can save them as a Crop Preset. Just click on the Crop tool icon in the Crop option palette and select the Preset menu tick. Select New Tool Preset. Name the Preset (here 4×5 100). This new crop preset will be added to the crop preset list. This preset can then be selected to configure the crop tool option fields.
    
18. When you are satisfied with your crop tool setting simply press the enter key to complete the crop which will adjust not only the image dimension but its resolution as well.
    Tip:
    You may want to consider apply some sharpening after you accomplish a crop that adjusts the linear resolution of your image to offset any interpolation based softening.So, as you can see the crop tool has a many capabilities that can help you quickly adjust your images.

I think this might be impossible to do, but I'll ask anyway... If I have an image (png) with a border/margin around its edges of unknown width and of a specific color, would it be possible to automatically crop the border based on color? I.E., I have a 300x300px image, with a flower in the center of a white box/background, and then a 100px black margin all around the edges of the white area. I wouldnt know beforehand how wide the black margin is, so I would need to tell imagemagick "trim off all of the black border, leave just the white box/background with flower.... Is there anything like this available through imageMagick??? Please help, thanks...

The reason why the manipulation of margins does not make me happy is that I have to name concrete numbers for every diagram. Basically, it would be nice to tell R to produce PDF output without *any* white border. It looks ugly when viewed directly, but it is perfect when included in documents, where, e.g., TeX takes care of spaces between diagrams an captions, etc. Even your examples with the reduced borders still show a white border around the diagram. It would take rather long to get rid of that by using trial and error. The disadvantage with pdfcrop is that it takes an additional step: First, I have to produce the diagrams, then, I have to call pdfcrop on them to crop the white space. pdfcrop does a perfect job here: It crops the complete white space around a diagram automatically without having me to name some concrete numbers. It would be very nice if R would have an option that would allow to do me to do this for graphics that will be included in documents later. Claus
